Stand Up Paddle Boarding: A Must-Do Activity This Summer

Stand Up Paddle Boarding: A Must-Do Activity This Summer

Summer is almost here, it's the perfect time to try your hands at stand up paddle boarding.

Stand up paddle boarding is a fun activity you can do on lakes, rivers, bays and even the ocean. It’s a great way to get fresh air, explore the outdoors, and gain exercise. Plus, there’s even room on the board for a friend, child or dog to share your adventure.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started on your paddling journey.

How To Get Started Stand Up Paddle Boarding

First, you need to choose your board. There are a few different shapes and sizes of SUP boards available. They can be constructed from fibreglass and foam or can be inflatable. You have to decide which one is right for you.

Beginner paddle boarders should choose a wider, longer and thick board to give them more stability in the water. As you gain confidence, you can change to a smaller board.

Also, keep in mind portability. A fibreglass paddle board is going to be significantly harder to carry around than a good inflatable SUP.

There are various styles of SUPs available to suit different activities, including:

  • All rounder boards
  • Fishing
  • Yoga
  • Touring
  • Surfing

Once you’ve chosen your board, you’ll also need a paddle, leash, board bag, and life jacket. To choose the correct size for your paddle, think about your height, your arm’s length, the paddle board’s height above the water, and the type of paddling you want to do.

Now that you’re all set up, it’s time to start paddling!

How To Stand Up On Your Board:

Standing up on your paddle board isn’t as hard as it may seem, but it does require some balance and caution.

  • Start in calm water with a wide and stable board.
  • Start in a kneeling position.
  • Slowly stand up, one foot at a time.
  • Keep your knees slightly bent and centre your core over the board.

How To Paddle:

Once you’ve stood up, it’s time to get moving!

  • Place both hands on the paddle, your top hand acts like a lever and your bottom hand is the pivot point.
  • Insert your paddle into the water.
  • Pull your paddle gently through the water.
  • To go straight, do a few strokes on one side, then switch to the other.
  • To turn, paddle repeatedly on the same side of the board.
