Fraser Island is one of the top places to go for 4WDing and camping in Queensland. The heritage-listed island is popular with families and always gets packed out during the holidays. 

Due to its popularity, Fraser can get lots of rubbish and debris building up each year. That’s why Four Wheel Drive Queensland runs an annual event in May to clean up the island. 

Fraser Island Clean Up has been running annually since 2001. It’s an event where 4WDers, clubs, volunteers and sponsors come together to clean up over a weekend. 

Last year, a total of 649 adult and 99 child volunteers took part in the event. They picked up just under 62,000kg of debris in two days.

Why is cleaning up important?

• Reduce pollution: Fraser Island can become polluted from residents and visitors and from ships going past. The simple fact that last year’s event saw 62,000 kgs of debris removed from the beaches highlights how much rubbish accumulates each year.
  
  
• Protect wildlife: Fraser Island is home to a wide range of wildlife, including dingoes, birds, wallabies, frogs and more. Its waters are home to migrating whales, dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and rays. Cleaning up Fraser helps to keep its animals safe from harmful plastics. 

Did you know an estimated one million birds and 100,000 marine animals die each year across the world as a result of plastic pollution? They can become entangled in plastic or become ill from consuming it. Reducing the amount of plastic in the environment is crucial for protecting wildlife.
